Q3 2026 macroeconomic update : The last pillar standing
Five supports carried this market. Four may be turning into headwinds.

Heading into Q4 2026, the risk/reward balance has shifted negative. Tailwinds are turning into headwinds, and growth now rests on AI capital spending alone. Fiscal stimulus has peaked, easing is giving way to hike risk, and energy is feeding inflation. Valuation offers no cushion: stocks are priced at levels last seen before the 1929 and 2000 crashes, with no extra reward for the risk. With the US Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and Bank of Japan now raising interest rates, history warns of a potential meaningful equity downside.
01 Fiscal Peak and the Loss of U.S. Credibility Peak fiscal stimulus is behind us, replaced by eroding U.S. policy credibility and rising long bond yields. Gold has overtaken U.S. Treasuries as the largest central bank reserve asset for the first time since the mid-1990s.
02 Monetary Easing Is Turning Into Tightening The easing cycle is over, with more hikes now possible within twelve months. When the Fed cuts into inflation and then tightens, equities have averaged -4.8% over the following year.
03 The Wealth Effect Is Running Dry Household net worth has flattened after gaining roughly $70 trillion USD from the 2020 low. Housing is unaffordable, bonds won't help, and equity gains are concentrated at the top in one crowded asset class.
04 Energy: From Reprieve Back to Shock Relief in crude did not last, and strain has moved to refined products. Elevated crack spreads and diesel prices imply PPI above 4% into spring, keeping hike pressure alive well into 2027.
05 The Last Pillar: AI Capex AI capital expenditure is the one pillar still holding everything else up, and new doubts emerge daily. Spending has reached roughly 4.95% of GDP, above the 2000 peak, and is increasingly debt-funded.
